10 Traditions to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day in 2018

By Brittany Hawes on March 16, 2018

It’s already March so you know what that means—it’s time to start celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! If you’re planning on letting St. Patrick’s Day slide by this year without celebrating, I hope you’ll reconsider! Although it might not get as much hype as other early year celebrations, such as Valentine’s Day or Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day can be just as much fun! It’s all about how you and your friends plan to celebrate it. Getting pinched for not wearing green might get old after a while to some people, while others love the thrill of seeking out green-less adversaries to pinch. But pinching isn’t the only fun thing about St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, here are 10 traditions you can start for St. Patrick’s Day in 2018.

1. Learn about Ireland!

There’s a lot to learn about the beautiful land of Ireland and its wide and varied culture. Take some time to learn about Ireland’s landscape: the rolling hills, the deep, green forests, and the surrounding waters. Learn about the traditional clothing and food there.  You can also learn a few traditional Irish dances or recipes, if you’re feeling adventurous!

2. Take green to the next level!

You know those people in middle school who claimed they were wearing green underwear when someone went to pinch them, but probably weren’t? Yeah, don’t be like those people. Rock your green. Challenge your friends and yourself to dress from head to toe in green clothing. Dress up your outfit with some green accessories like silly headbands, funny buttons, floppy hats, wristbands, and shoelaces! You can even make it a contest. Whoever has assembled the greenest outfit gets to pick their favorite spot for dinner that night and gets to be called “The Great Green One” for the rest of the year.

3. Make a St. Paddy’s Day experimental drink!

Of course, this drink needs to be green. You can always add some green food coloring to your drink ingredients before you mix them together. Or you can look at these seven delicious St. Patrick Day’s drink recipes and try the ones that really pique your curiosity.

4. Bake something!

Do your friends love your baking? They’d probably love it if you treated them to some St. Patrick’s Day-inspired cupcakes or cookies then! Get everyone together and have a sweets decorating day where you can decorate your treats with green icing, gold sprinkles, and whatever else you can think of. If you’re a beginner baker, here’s a recipe for simple but tasty cupcakes that will make everyone happy.

5. Decorate your dorm/apartment!

Decorating is fun. Use St. Patrick’s Day as a day to let your creative juices flow and get to hanging up shamrocks, leprechauns, pots of gold, and glimmering rainbows. I guarantee you’ll have a good time and you might even inspire your neighbors to decorate their place. Plus, decorating your home is a great way to battle homesickness.

6. Throw a St. Patrick’s Day party!

Speaking of ways to combat loneliness, throwing a party and inviting everyone you know and love is another great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday in 2018, you won’t have to worry about class in the morning and will (hopefully) be free to party the night away. Have guests try their hands at some traditional Irish recipes and bring them along to the party. Have plenty of alcohol to keep in the spirit of the holiday, play some folk music, and have some laughs while trying to do some Irish dancing. Capture plenty of videos!

7. Give out gifts!

It’s not Christmas, it’s not Valentine’s Day, but who says you can’t give out some small gifts in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Buy some green candies, chocolate coins, and Skittles, put them in a small green bag, and leave them outside of a friend’s house as a surprise. They’ll appreciate the gesture!

8. Go to a parade!

Parades are a good way to get together with everyone in your city and celebrate. Bonus tip: Parades are also a nifty way to grab free beads and free candy.

9. Learn about St. Patrick’s Day!

There’s so much more to St. Patrick’s Day than the color green. St. Patrick’s Day is meant to honor Christianity’s introduction to Ireland. St. Patrick, the missionary and patron saint of Ireland, died on March 17, hence the reason this day is celebrated on. There’s a lot more to St. Patrick’s Day, especially religious wise. Gather knowledge about this beautiful holiday and share it with your friends!

10. Spread the joy on campus!

Once others see you having so much celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, they’ll most likely want to join in on all of the fun. If those around you seem a little shy about joining in on the festivities, a spare bag of candy by their doorstep might persuade them to loosen up and celebrate.
